Hugh Mighty

Senior Advisory Consultant

Dr. Hugh E. Mighty serves as Senior Advisory Consultant to Harris Search Associates providing insight, national relationships, and vetting of candidates on behalf of client institution committees and our firm. He is a nationally recognized healthcare leader with over three decades of executive experience spanning academic medicine, hospital operations, clinical integration, and public health strategy. He brings a track record of strategic transformation, operational turnaround, and mission-driven innovation across complex health systems.

Dr. Mighty has held senior leadership roles including CEO of Howard University Hospital Corporation, Senior Vice President for Health Affairs and Healthcare Innovation at Howard University, Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs at LSU Health Sciences Center, and Dean of the College of Medicine at Howard University. Prior to this he also served as department chair for 15 years. In these roles, he managed multimillion-dollar healthcare enterprises, led institutional mergers, implemented enterprise-wide EHR systems, and built financially sustainable academic and hospital models. He has also chaired compliance, risk, and audit committees - demonstrating strong governance capabilities essential for guiding organizations to stability and positioning institutions for long-term success in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

A pioneering clinician, Dr. Mighty has remained active in academic medicine, having secured over $50 million in competitive funding to advance community health initiatives, clinical trials, mobile medicine, and centers of excellence. Dr. Mighty’s governance experience includes oversight of self-insurance trusts, health sciences compliance, and state-appointed public health commissions. He has testified before legislative bodies and led public-private partnerships, positioning him as a thoughtful, pragmatic steward of stakeholder trust.

Dr. Mighty earned his MD from the University of Maryland and an MBA with a focus on healthcare management. He is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and completed advanced fellowships in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Critical Care.
